What Is the Kansas Adult Learner Grant?

The Kansas Adult Learner Grant provides financial assistance for adult students aged 25 and older who are seeking a bachelor’s degree in specific fields of study, including nursing. The goal is simple: help adult students in high-demand career fields; including nursing; afford school at Kansas colleges.

Who Can Apply?

The grant is for Kansas residents who are 25 years or older by the time they enroll in an approved high demand bachelor’s program, including nursing, from an eligible 4-year institution.

How Much Money Could You Receive?

The Kansas Adult Learner Grant awards are based on how many credit hours you take per semester of college and your family household income. You could receive:

  • $3,000 per semester 12 or more hours
  • $2,750 per semester 11 hours
  • $2,500 per semester 10 hours
  • $2,250 per semester 9 hours
  • $2,000 per semester 8 hours
  • $1,750 per semester 7 hours
  • $1,500 per semester 6 hours

Family household income also matters. Eligible students will make $100,000 or less for a family of 2; $150,000 or less for a family of 3; $150,000 + $4,800 per additional family member beyond 3.

All grants are given on a first-come, first-served basis, so it pays to apply early!

The Service Obligation; What You Agree To

Accepting this grant means signing a legally binding agreement with the State of Kansas. Here's what you're committing to:

  • Finish on time: Complete your nursing program within 48 months of receiving your first scholarship payment
  • Gain employment: After graduating, get a job in Kansas within 6 months of graduating
  • Stay in Kansas: Live AND work in Kansas for two consecutive years after graduation
  • Important: If you don't meet these requirements, you may have to pay back the grant money
  • Good news: Kansas has a strong demand for nurses! Finding a nursing job in Kansas after graduation is very achievable; which means fulfilling the two-year work requirement should be straightforward for most graduates.

  • Apply early: Contact your school's financial aid office early; awards are first-come, first-served
  • File your FAFSA: Complete your FAFSA first so your other aid is calculated before the Promise Scholarship fills the gap
  • Plan your program: Talk to your school's nursing department about program timelines to make sure you can complete your degree within 48 months
  • Look ahead: Research hospitals, clinics, and healthcare facilities hiring in Kansas; start building connections early!
